Which AEG fridge ? With or without ice box is the main question with a fridge, although ice box fridges are becoming less and less popular. This is because of the defrosting which, unlike a freezer because most ice boxes are 1* and 2* is a regular occurrence. If you really need an ice box, try and buy a fridge with a freezer box, this will then be properly insulated (it will have a proper seal on the door) so it will not need defrosting very often. There are some very cheap ice box fridges on the market and the ice box is not even rated, these are only suitable for making ice cubes. A self defrosting larder fridge is the best choice, apart from cleaning they are maintenance free, unless they break down of course. A larder fridge works between 1 - 8 degrees depending how cold you like it, remember that cold meats should always be kept below 5 degrees so try to keep it just below that. Its a good idea to invest in a fridge thermometer, as they are only cheap and will give you an idea of the ambient temperature.
As with all appliances energy ratings are A - G with 'A' being the most efficient and 'G' being the least. Today there really is no point in buying less than an 'A' rated as there are so many available, the running costs can be less than £15 per year! You can help the energy efficiency yourself by following a few guidelines. Try to avoid keeping the door open whilst you are putting the shopping away, not only are you wasting energy but you will raise the temperature inside the fridge. Also, try to avoid the very common habit of opening the fridge door and just standing there not knowing what to choose!

AEG's history spans over 100 years, from the founding of AEG with the purchase of the German license for Edison patents to the first electrical appliances created by Peter Behrens, the father of design. It all started with the light bulb. Emil Rathenau, founder of AEG, bought the German licence for the Edison patents and in 1883 founded the German Edison Society in Berlin, which was renamed General Electricity Society (AEG, Allgemeine Elektrizitaets-Gesellschaft) in 1887. In 1889, this company went public in Berlin with an exhibition of the first electrical heating units. On show were items such as curling tongs, cigar lighters, irons and tea kettles. The 1896 AEG catalogue already contained 80 different products, among them hotplates, coffee machines and egg cookers. Already at that time, the technology as well as the designs were impressive. At the beginning of the century, AEG was the first industrial company that employed a designer. This was the architect Peter Behrens who in 1907 was commissioned not only to design new factories but also appliances for AEG. |
