There has been much hype for many years about the ‘Networked kitchen’ Well finally a product range has been released which may revolutionise the way we use our kitchen. Electronics manufacturer Salton is making life simpler, more convenient and fun with its Beyond™ Connected Home product line, a series of network-able devices focused in the kitchen. Beyond products include the Beyond iCEBOX FlipScreen and CounterTop kitchen entertainment centers, Beyond Microwave, Beyond Bread Maker and Beyond Coffee Maker.
The iCEBOX™ FlipScreen has been offering consumers the convenience of information, communication and entertainment in the kitchen for two years and now will be complemented by the remaining Beyond Connected Home products. Salton has licensed the Westinghouse™ brand from Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the Beyond Connected Home product line. From using the intuitive web interface to checking financial reports, the icebox is a great gadget. For ease of use the icebox has the Microsoft® CE.Net operating system installed. |

The Beyond Smart microwave is just one example of how technology can help transform your kitchen in to a high tech fusion of smart appliances. The smart microwave uses a barcode scanner to read barcodes from the product packaging. It then programmes itself to cook to perfection. It comes with 4,000 pre programmed barcodes and stores your favourites as you use it. If you use the Beyond home hub, the smart microwave will download and install new barcode updates as they become available, smart! |

The home hub is the brains behind the whole system, looking like a micro hifi you could easily underestimate it. An LCD panel on the front of the unit is used to display a whole host of helpful information. From weather reports, financial reports and web interface, to high quality cd player with am/fm. It can even tell you if your coffee is ready when you are still in bed! The whole system currently consists of bread maker, coffee maker, microwave, home hub and ice box entertainment system. The ice box is designed for the modern kitchen, with either flip down panel or counter top version. The ice box has all the same functions of the home hub, but is much more useful in the busiest room in the house. |

Our view is that the beyond system in its present form is more gadget than necessity, but it is an indicator of where we may be heading in the not so distant future. We would love to see the same technology introduced to washing machines (are you listening Mr Dyson!) Imagine if all clothes had a barcode label. An alarm would sound if you were trying to load a coloured in a white load, or a woolly in a 90 degree load. It may not be so popular with the male population though as it would take away the excuse of not knowing how to operate the machine! Perhaps one of the online supermarkets should help develop smart cupboards which are linked to you’re their online shopping software. Take something from the cupboard swiping it passed the reader as you go, it automatically enters the product in your online basket. A once a week reminder is displayed on the screen for your final check, and hey presto your shopping arrives the next day.
